Elio Bernardo-Ruiz is a Cuban/Mexican writer and filmmaker residing in New York City. He has written for theater, television, film and for print media, and has participated in noteworthy productions throughout Cuba, Germany, Mexico and the United States. He has also taught drama, screenwriting workshops, and has been an acting coach for renowned institutions including Cuba’s International School of Cinema and Television and throughout Mexico at the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Center for Cinematographic Instruction (Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica also known as “C.C.C.”), the Lumière Institute at Mexico City and the Cuauhtémoc University and Cinecipac, both at Puebla City, Mexico.

In 1986, Bernardo-Ruiz staged in Havana, Cuba, “Auto Sacramental”, dramatization based on the biographic facts regarding two historic charac­ters, a Cuban violinist from XIX Century and his comparison with Blind Tom’s paradigm, an Afro American pianist from the same period.

As a screenwriter and filmmaker, Bernardo-Ruiz’s works were recognized with several national and international awards as well as honorable mentions in the categories of Documentary and Documentary Mini Series, including the “Caracol” Award from Cuba’s Writer and Artist Union (UNEAC) in 1989 and 1990.

Also in 1989 and 1990, he received the “Coral” Award at Havana’s International Film Festival for Miniseries Documentary “Los que llegaron después” or “Whose arrived later” and Documentary “Quién Baila Aquí (La Rumba Sin Lentejuelas)” or “Who Dancing Here (Rumba without Spangles)”, respectively.

Additionally he received the “Pitirre” Award in 1990 from the Cine San Juan, Puerto Rico‘s Film Festival for best documentary director of “Quién Baila Aquí (La Rumba Sin Lentejuelas)” or “Who Dance Here (Rumba without Spangles)”.

In 1991 he migrated to Mexico where he developed his careers in the advertising industry and at artistic educational institutions.

In 1995 he received a grant from Berlin-Brandenburg Film Board, Germany; y order to develop a screenplay entitled “The black Paganini”, based on the historical character the violinist Brindis de Salas, currently in process of becoming an animated film.

In 1997 he was granted by the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE) to develop a Non Fiction Film Project about the Caribbean history entitled “Eras of the Caribbean”. Nowadays he is looking for financial resources for production.

In 2004 he began researching, developing and writing the first treatment for a biopic film on former Champion of the World “Sugar Ramos”, and the Diaspora of Cuban boxers that happened at the sixties. Today is a non fiction film project titled “The Champion’s trek”.

Since 2005 he has established his permanent resident in the United States.

In 2010 he began writing, researching and developing Morningside, Miami, a feature film project, up today.
